The youngsters by first season sire Your Song and proven champion sire Snitzel both sold for $135,000 during a session in which slight increases were recorded across the board.
The action started early in proceedings when Lot 3, the Your Song half brother to recent Magic Millions Western Australian 2YO Classic winner The River was sold to Trevor Andrews.
The colt offered by Western Breeders Alliance will join the same stable at The River who is now heading to the Karrakatta Plate after his rich win at Pinjarra just over a week ago.
“He’s obviously pretty attractive because we’ve got the half brother and I like quite a few lots late tomorrow so I thought I better strike early otherwise I could miss out on a couple of the others.”
“He’s an easy horse to sell,” Andrews added. “I’ve pretty much got him sold now. He’ll be an up and running style Magic Millions horse for next year and I’m pleased to get hold of him.”
Later in the evening Singapore based owner Constance Cheng also went to $135,000 to secure the Snitzel-Royale Harvest colt from Amelia Park Racing and Breeding.
Flanked by trainer Steven Crutchley, Cheng was all smiles after she was able to secure the colt who is the sixth foal of the stakes performed and eight time winning High Yield mare Royale Harvest.
Amelia Park Racing and Breeding also supplied the day’s third top seller with the Sebring colt from New Zealand group winner Madame Shinko who was knocked down to Morton Racing for $120,000.
“I just thought he was a cracking colt,” trainer Danny Morton said. “He’s off a good farm and we were trying to buy horses like that at the Gold Coast a few weeks ago and we couldn’t get near them, so I’m happy to have him.”
“He’s all there. Sebring is a superstar sire and he’s a real athlete and he’s very well grown already. He’s just going to make into a lovely athletic style of horse.”
Your Song wasn’t the only first season sire to shine at Belmont. Members of the first crop of the Yarradale Stud based Gingerbread Man went under the hammer on Monday and his colt from good producer Morine was purchased by Astute Bloodstock from the draft of Korilya Stud for $75,000. The colt will head to the Simon Miller stable.
“He’s a nice style of horse,” Miller noted. “The mare throws winners – she’s thrown Man Booker who’s won a Guineas and my horse seems well above average.”
“It doesn’t seem to matter who the mare goes to – she throws good running types and hopefully that is the case here. I liked his attitude and he he moved so well – he’s got a big girth a strong hindquarter so all that equates to hopefully being fast!”
During the afternoon and evening session over $3.9 million was traded on 103 lots sold at an average price of $37,981 and clearance rate of 77 per cent – the latter well up on the 68 per cent achieved for last year’s two day auction.
“It’s been a pleasing start,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. “With the blended results of last year the average was about $37,000 and we’re sitting just above that at about $38,000 and a gross just shy of $4 million so it’s a very good start.”
“The way the cards have fallen means there’s some high profile lots coming in tomorrow so we anticipate we can build on the good numbers already.”
“The (rise in) clearance rate is very pleasing,” Cox added. “That was something we were worried about coming into this sale and to be sitting around 77 to 78 per cent is a very good start.”
