Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse is unsure whether unbeaten colt Just the Tonic will head to the $1 million Golden Rose following his win at Rosehill on Saturday.
The beautifully bred son of Redoute’s Choice held off Rekindled Alliance to win the 1400 metre race and delight punters who sent him out a $3.20 elect with bookmakers.
“I’m not saying he will run in the Golden Rose and I’m not saying he won’t,” Waterhouse told AAP.
“He has taken a while to come to hand. I want him for a long time and not a short time.”
“He hasn’t had the grounding the other horses have had but he’s a good horse in the making and this was a horse race.”
A graduate of Baramul Stud, Just the Tonic was purchased by Waterhouse for $400,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Earlier this year she buttered up to buy his three quarter brother by Flying Spur for $150,000.
Just the Tonic is one of seven winners for the 100 per cent winner producer Platonic.
A daughter of Nassipour, Platonic won in Sydney and Brisbane and is a half sister to the stakes winners Shovhog and Shovoff.
Just the Tonic is therefore a three parts brother to Leveller – a Group Three winner of the Thoroughbred breeders Stakes at Flemington on debut.
A full brother to Just the Tonic is being prepared by the team from Baramul Stud for January’s 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
