Wandering Star Dazzles On Gold Coast

Promising filly Wandering Star will back up in tomorrow week’s $100,000 Queensland Events Magic Millions 2YO Plate (1200m) after a comprehensive win at the Gold Coast today.

A daughter of Southern Halo’s group winning son Star Cross, Wandering Star tracked the favourite Sequano throughout before bursting to the lead in the straight and racing away to win.

The filly, a Furlong Stud graduate at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearing Sale, came into the race following a debut second in Brisbane recently.

The win was a timely one for her yearling half sister by exciting young Red Ransom sire Red Dazzler who will go under the hammer on Sunday week.

“She’s a really nice filly,” Furlong Stud’s Jim Atkinson said. “She is well conformed and is a really nice prospect.”

“The mare always has a smart runner and Wandering Star is doing the job and she won well today and race very smart time.”

She got through the wet track conditions well under Scott Seamer and proved much too strong for her rivals.

Winning trainer Liam Birchley said Wandering Star would run in the $100,000 juvenile event at next week’s $4.6 million Magic Millions raceday provided she pulls up well.

Wandering Star returnsWandering Star is the fourth winner, from four to race, for the twice city winning Naturalism mare Winning Walk.

Winning Walk, whose other foals including the Sydney winner Upyonder, is a daughter of the Group One NZ Championship Stakes winner Lady Agnes.

A daughter of Gleam Machine, Lady Agnes was the joint Filly of the Year in New Zealand.

Campaigned in Sydney she won the Group Three Adrian Knox Stakes and was third in the Group One AJC Oaks of her year.

Furlong Stud, who also sold Paprika at last year’s sale, have a quality packed draft of nine yearlings at this week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Among them is a full sister to star Sydney sprinter Gold Trail who will run in today’s Group One Railway Handicap in New Zealand.
