| New records for average and sale gross were achieved at the auction with a strong local, interstate and international buying bench competing for the cream of the Tasmanian yearling crop. A List Stud rounded out the day as leading buyer, securing six lots including the sale topper (Lot 106) at $150,000. Consigned by Armidale Stud, the Toronado filly is from the good producing Elvstroem mare Il Sogno, a daughter of the triple group winner Tickle My. “She was the pick of the sale for my team across the inspections and we are delighted to be able to buy her,” A List’s Chris Lee said. “Her sire Toronado is going really well with his progeny in Australia and overseas. She’s a great mover – got a lovely walk and I look forward to her joining the A List stable.” Lee said the filly would head to the Gold Coast stables of Allan Chau and enter the A List system and a decision will be made whether or not she is offered as a two-year-old or she is retained to race. “She has got a nice pedigree and I might choose to keep and race her and eventually join the A List broodmare band,” Lee added. Progeny by Grenville Stud’s freshman sire Stratosphere (Snitzel) proved popular and his colt from In Harmony was the star when selling to Bevan Smith Bloodstock for $125,000. The colt, from an Exceed and Excel mare, is a half brother to two stakes performers including the Singapore star Celavi and the colt is set to join that star at Kranji. A List Stud went to $115,000 to secure Armidale Stud’s Epaulette colt from Myhro late in the day – achieving the third highest price. Leading bloodstock agent John Foote snapped up five lots on the day. His purchases were headlined by the day’s fourth six figure seller – the Shamus Award-Ecosse colt from Alva Stud at $110,000. The leading buyer for individual lots was leading local trainer John Blacker – his nine lots cost a total of $190,000. Tasracing CEO Paul Eriksson said today’s sale was a highly successful day for the Tasmanian thoroughbred racing and breeding industry. “The sale attracted buyers from around Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong which assisted the sale to achieve a record gross of $4.3m well above the 2021 record of $3.3m and a record average, with a clearance rate of more than 80 per cent,” he said. “Magic Millions and Tasbreeders are to be congratulated for the work they did with us on the sale. Today’s success demonstrates what we can achieve if we work collectively.” “It is also a clear statement that the Tasmanian racing industry is alive and well and our local breeding is on the rise,” Eriksson added. Armidale Stud finished the sale as leading vendors by gross ($1,709,500) and average ($53,422) for 32 lots sold. Grenville Stud ($638,000 for 17 sold) and Motree Thoroughbreds ($609,000 for 17 sold) also enjoyed positive results. “I am thrilled with today’s results. It’s continued on with the trend of the yearling sale series this year,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “There’s been a good, strong, healthy market and I am delighted for the vendors of Tasmania. They really work hard to achieve these results and, on a whole, to get their horses sold with a record average, record median and a record gross, it’s a great result for Tasmania.” “Nearly all states of Australia bought a horse which was great.
