Talented young Sydney trainer Con Karakatsanis predicted a bright future for My Destiny following his impressive win in the Cafe Culture Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury tonight.
Heavily backed all day by punters in fixed odds markets and again in the betting ring on course, My Destiny sat just off the speed before rider Glyn Schofield made his move approaching the turn.
The gelding was stepping out for just the second time. On debut he got well back in the field before coming with a strong run for a second placing at Hawkesbury earlier in the month.
“He really trained on from his Hawkesbury placing,” Karakatsanis said.
“I was quite confident coming into tonight. It was a perfect ride.”
“One thing I did say to Glyn was that the horse is looking for a mile and don’t be afraid to let him rip at the 600 (metre mark).”
“He’s still got plenty of improvement. He’s still quite green and he’s still a bit immature.”
“But in six to 12 months he’s going to be a really, really nice horse,” he added.
Karakatasanis said My Destiny was purchased for $50,000 from the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale – snapped up from the draft of Southern Cross Breeders.
“He’s repaid his owners with the good win tonight,” Karakatsanis noted.
My Destiny is the second winner from three to run for the lightly raced Grand Lodge mare Grand Story.
Unplaced in her racetrack outings, Grand Story is a beautifully related mare – a half sister to Group One Doomben Cup winner Mr Bureaucrat and the ill fated Gloaming Stakes winner All Black Gold.
Grand Story is also a half sister to the five time winner and stakes placed galloper Nozomi Express as well as the dam of Gimcrack Stakes placegetter Mi Chiamo.
My Destiny is another impressive city winner for former star Magic Millions graduate Stratum – a Golden Slipper winning son of Redoute’s Choice.
The Widden Stud resident is already the sire of six stakes winners and six further stakes placegetter – great figures considering his oldest crop is just two.
Last season his daughter Crystal Lily scored a remarkable win in the world’s richest juvenile race – the Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
His other stakes winner to date are Eramor, Estrato, Spectrolite, Eclair Mystic and Pellizotti.
Shortly after My Destiny was winning for Stratum at Canterbury – his stakes bound filly Umgeton thrashed a quality field in the $55,000 Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge (Heat 14) over 955 metres.
Trained by Brendon Hearps, Umgeton cruised home under Craig Newitt to beat What a Beauty in great style.
The filly was purchased for just $18,000 from the 2008 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. Her earnings have now raced past $100,000.
