Straight Gold made the best possible start to his racing career when he demoralised his rivals in the Lynch Flowers Handicap (1100m) at Canterbury tonight.
A $300,000 purchase from the Widden Stud draft at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Straight Gold couldn’t have been more impressive – streaking away from his rivals for the easiest of wins.
The Stratum colt, trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, sat off the kiwi visitor Alkie for much of the race before rounding up that speedy customer and dominating the race.
Despite being eased up to a canter by Corey Brown, Straight Gold still held a four and three quarter length margin over his nearest rival.
Straight Gold had trialled twice leading into tonight’s debut run. He chased by Anevay when fourth in late September before coming back to win at Warwick Farm on late January.
“It was a lovely debut,” Michael Hawkes told TVN after the win. “He has a lot to learn, but he is a lovely colt.”
“He is raw and when he matures and keeps improving he will be a nice horse.”
Winning rider Corey Brown couldn’t have been more impressed with the effortless victory.
“He was really impressive,” Brown reported. “He jumped well and travelled beautifully.”
“I think they’ve got their hands on a pretty good one,” the star rider added.
Straight Gold was purchased by Hong Kong based bloodstock agent George Moore for $300,000 on behalf of stable clients of his father, top trainer John Moore.
The exciting colt is the second named foal for the former outstanding SA bred and WA raced mare Golden Delicious.
A daughter of Made of Gold, Golden Delicious won 13 races, including four at two, and won five stakes races including the William Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Her first foal Hilton Head was a city winner in Brisbane on debut for Tony Noonan.
There are two yearlings by Straight Gold’s sire Stratum catalogued for next week’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont.
