The build up to January’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast gained momentum at Flemington today when Magic Millions graduates filled the placings in the listed AGL Solar Power Stakes (1000m).
The Classic, Queensland’s richest race, will be the target for at least the winner and runner-up of the race after they streeted their rivals in a pair of impressive performances.
Trainer Robbie Laing was thrilled with the effort of Spectrolite, who bombed the start and came from the tail of the field, saying the January feature would be well and truly on her plans.
“I’ll see how she pulls up,” Laing said. “But I might even run her in the Maribyrnong (Plate) on Saturday.”
“And then the Magic Millions (Classic) in January would be an obvious target for her,” he added.
Spectrolite ($13-$15) finished powerfully under Craig Williams to nab Gold Coast visitor Military Grace ($4-$5) to win by a half length.
Dinner Date ($10-$13) completed the sweep by running third, another two and a quarter lengths back.
Still not even two, considering she was foaled on November 11, Spectrolite showed she was on track for the race when she came to Flemington on Tuesday morning for a jump out and performed well.
She had previously run third at a public trial at Cranbourne last month.
The filly was purchased from the draft of Baerami Thoroughbreds for just $26,000 at June’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
“She’s a beautiful moving filly,” Laing noted. “She’s done an enormous job.”
“I didn’t buy her until June up at the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast – she took three or four weeks to get home – I think we broke her in in August,” he added.
“A Rory’s Jester mare by Stratum – it was just speed, speed, speed and the Stratums were going well so we were happy to grab her.”
“You win these races with pure speed – but she got back a long way and she was very strong at the finish.”
Winning rider Craig Williams was tickled pink with the performance and said Spectrolite won with something in hand.
“She jumped out only reasonable and then I was able to get on the back of Michael (Rodd, Military Grace) and he put a couple of lengths on me, but I just felt when she got clear there was no doubt of getting beaten.”
“She just seemed to lengthen really well and won with nice authority,” Williams summed up.
Spectrolite, like this year’s Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily, is a daughter of Stratum – himself a graduate of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale – and winner of the Slipper.
Her dam, the three time winning Rory’s Jester mare Canicula, is a half sister to the Sydney based stakes winner Hitapotomoss.
Canicula is a perfect winner producer – her five runners all winners.
Spectrolite is the second juvenile stakes winner this season for Stratum following Eramor’s win the recent Debutants Stakes.
Last season his pair of stakes winners were Slipper winner Crystal Lily and the Lee Freedman trained Pellizotti.
