The 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale got away to a solid start on Wednesday with spirited bidding throughout the day.

The brother to Stratum topped the session when selling to leading Melbourne based trainer Peter Moody for $850,000.

All up over $16.65 million was traded on 131 quality yearlings at an everage price of $127,172. The clearance rate was 75 per cent.

Magic Millions Managing Director Stephen Silk said he was pleased with the opening session of the auction and was looking forward to tomorrow’s second session.

“It’s been a satisfying day for both buyers and vendors,” Silk reported. “It did seem to be a buyer’s market – I think there was some great value buying.”

“We were pleased with some strong international bidding – particularly from the Hong Kong Jockey Club which has been a strong supporter of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale over recent years.”

The sale was opened today by Queensland Minister for Tourism Peter Lawlor – representing Premier Anna Bligh.

A minute’s silence was held in tribute for those affected in the Queensland Flood Disaster.

“Obviously everyone’s thoughts are on those in areas surrounding us here on the Gold Coast who have been badly affected by flooding.”

“On Saturday night we will be auctioning off nominations to leading stallions Al Maher, Flying Spur, High Chaparral and Lonhro.”

“And we have collection buckets around our complex and likewise at the races on Saturday,” Silk added.

The second session of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale commences at 11am (Qld time) on Thursday.
