Sizzling Schwarz Sprints to William Reid Success

Electrifying sprinter Schwarz sent his future stallion value soaring when he scored a brilliant win in yesterday’s $1 million Group One William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
Already a multiple Group Two winner in Sydney and Melbourne, Schwarz notched his career defining victory with a dashing display under top local rider Jamie Mott.

The pair showed speed from the start and sat at the head of the field before bursting clear of his rivals approaching the turn and then holding out the challenges from minor placegetters Benedetta and Jimmysstar. At the post the handsome son of Zoustar held a soft length margin.

“It’s fantastic,” co-trainer Tom Charlton, who prepares Schwarz with John O’Shea said. “I’m thrilled for the horse, the ownership group and all our staff that have put a fantastic effort into this horse.”

“I thought Craig Williams put a good bit of pressure on us on She’s Bulletproof and I was slightly surprised by the kick this horse gave at the top of the straight. It was a dominant win.”

“He’s a big ticket stallion by Zoustar with a big pedigree. Team Rosemont will be very pleased.”

“He’s a relatively lightly-raced horse and we’ve learned quite a bit about him again this preparation. He was dominant here fresh, didn’t quite back-up two weeks later over 1400 metres and we had in the back of our mind to target again here, fresh, 1200 metres.”

“Credit to everyone and obviously my boss who is the mastermind of these things,” Charlton added. “I’m just very thankful to be in this position.”

“That’s an unbelievable performance from a horse that has got an unbelievable pedigree,” a beaming Anthony Mithen from Rosemont Stud said.

“He’s the best performed colt son of Zoustar there’s been. To win a weight-for-age Group One he’s become the winningest son of Zoustar that’s still a colt. He’ll go to stud a very attractive prospect.”

“There’s some great investors, not the least my brother-in-law Nigel Austin who has been an unbelievable support. He’s such an enthusiastic part of what we do and a motivator for us all.”

“The other investors, we thought we would get a stitch eventually, so we thought we would lay a bit of faith in those horses and one of them was Schwartz and he’s delivered for us today.”

Top class Melbourne rider Jamie Mott was delighted to snare a win at the elite level for connections he has linked up to win plenty of races in the past.

“Obviously there’s a few jockeys in Sydney and I was lucky enough that Tom and John got a hold of my manager and I got the ride. I jumped at the opportunity.”

“I have known Mitho and Nigel for a long time and we’ve had success but not at the top level. Really satisfying win.”

“Before the meeting I was a little concerned that the fence might be off by this race. The way the day played out it gave me more confidence that how I’m going to ride him is really going to suit and give him his best chance to win the race.”

“We got pressure early from She’s Bulletproof – he wouldn’t go back from his wide draw – so he did pressure me and he gave me a really strong kick in that going. He was good enough to hold them and it was a terrific win.”

Schwarz was a $1.25 million buy for Rosemont’s Victorian Alliance in conjunction with leading bloodstock agent Suman Hedge at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He was offered by his part breeder Widden Stud.

The son of Zoustar is one of two runners produced by the Group Two Angus Armanasco Stakes winner Summer Sham, a daughter of Not a Single Doubt.

Summer Sham herself was a $650,000 National Broodmare Sale buy in 2019 for David Redvers with yesterday’s Group One star in-utero.

She hails from one of the best Australian families in the Stud Book. Schwarz’s fourth dam is none other than Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad) – the dam of Group One winners Redoute’s Choice, Platinum Scissors and Manhattan Rain and fourth other stakes horses.

Schwarz’s win was the first of a feature race to race group winning double for Zoustar with his $2.6 million Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy Clean Energy steaming home to win the Group Three Don Casboult Classic.

Clean Energy, carrying the famous emerald green silks of Yulong, is a sister to Sunlight – whose daughter by Home Affairs knocked off Clean Energy’s record as the highest priced filly sold at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale at $3.2 million in January.

Meanwhile, other Magic Millions graduates amongst the stakes winners yesterday included unbeaten filly Autumn Glow in the Percy Sykes Stakes, Watch Me Rock in the Grandstand Cup and WA’s rising star Machine Gun Gracie in the Natasha Stakes.
