It was a buyers market at Belmont this evening as a large number of yearlings changed hands at the second session of the 2011 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
When the final lot of the session had passed through the ring the sale gross reached $7,942,000 for 178 yearlings sold to date.
The average price of $44,618 compares favourably with the $41,547 that the sale boasted at the same stage last year.
Nine yearlings sold for prices of $100,000 or more for the day – bringing the total to 15 for the two sessions to date.
The top price for the session came when leading trainer David Harrison went to $180,000 to secure a colt by leading Mungrup Stud sire Oratorio.
“He’s a nice, big and strong Oratorio colt,” Harrison said. “He’s a lot like (stable star) Waratah’s Secret.”
“He was my pick of the sale and I’m delighted to have been able to buy him.”
Magic Millions Acting Managing Director David Chester said the quality individuals of the session attracted good interest.
“There was some strong competition on a number of lots and that is nice to see – hopefully there is more of that to come,” Chester said.
“Obviously it would be nice to see the clearance rate higher. Hopefully that can climb during tomorrow’s third session.”
The third session of the auction will commence at 3pm (WA time) tomorrow (Friday). The Westspeed Session of the auction will then commence at 11am on Sunday.
“We have a large number of quality lots still to go under the hammer at the sale and we’re sure prospective buyers will be impressed,” Chester summed up.
