The value of buying from the Magic Millions National Sale was on full display at Flemington today when quality fillies Celebrity Girl and Star Salute led home rivals in the listed Cap d’Antibes Stakes (1100m).
Mark Kavanagh was all smiles when Celebrity Girl raced away in the new red starred colours of Adelaide businessman Trevor Robertson and wife Beth to make it two wins from two runs.
“I did expect that,” Kavanagh said. “She’s always been above average.”
“Her mother’s side of the family suggests she’ll be able to go towards the Oaks but we’ll head toward the Thousand Guineas at this stage.”
“She has a massive girth and a really nice walk. She just has style.”
Celebrity Girl is by Starcraft and is from the former stakes winning Keltrice mare Dashing Granada.
Dashing Granada was purchased by her current owner for $200,000 from the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when in foal to Starcraft.
The resultant foal, a filly, was sold for $500,000 as a yearling and is Celebrity Girl – now one of the most valuable fillies in the country.
The $200,000 investment looks a masterstroke with the mare having since produced fillies by Rock of Gibraltar and Lonhro. She was served last spring by Starcraft – due now any day to produce a full relation to Celebrity Girl.
Star Salute, a filly by General Nediym, ran strongly to finish second in the race for top Caulfield horseman Peter Moody.
Moody purchased the filly for $100,000 from last year’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from the draft of Baramul Stud.
A three time winner, Star Salute has already earned over $68,000 and looks a stakes winner in the making.
She is from the twice winning Spinning World mare Spinning Star – a half sister to the stakes winner Be My Princess – the dam of South African stakes winner Flying Princess.
