This week’s Magic Millions National Weanling Sale was highlighted when promising kiwi juvenile Misstrum won the listed Great Northern Foal Stakes (1400m) at Ellerslie today.

A daughter of leading Hunter Valley based sire Stratum, Misstrum was purchased from the 2011 National Weanling Sale by leading New Zealand based bloodstock agent Michael Wallace for $135,000.

The top prospect was offered at the Gold Coast by Sefton Park and one of a top group of youngsters purchased by kiwis at the Southern Hemisphere’s premier weanling auction.

Misstrum isn’t the first stakes winner to have already emerged from the sale – champion juvenile Pierro and Magic Millions Classic winner Driefontein also went through the ring as well as other kiwi stakes winners Platinum Kingdom and Silver City.

Today’s stakes winning filly is prepared by top horseman Roger James and was ridden to victory by Leith Innes.

Back off the speed during the early and middle stages of the race, Misstrum showed great acceleration over the concluding stages to reel in About Square to win by a widening neck margin. Twilight Granita was a further length and three quarter back in third place.

Misstrum is the second stakes performer and fourth winner produced by the stakes winning Barathea mare Malagra Miss.

A winner of the listed Maribynong Trial Stakes at Flemington, runner up in the Group Three Tranquil Star Stakes and third placegetter in the Group Two Ascot Vale Stakes, Malagra Miss is the dam of the stakes performed winner Cinecitta.

Misstrum is the 12th individual stakes winner for the former outstanding Magic Millions graduate and Golden Slipper winner and sire Stratum.

The son of Redoute’s Choice is a resident of Widden Stud and his influence is sure to attract strong attention at the National Sale with weanlings, yearlings and mares in foal to the sire as well as a share in the top producing stallion.

The National Sale commences at 10am (Qld time) on Monday with the first session of the National Broodmare Sale.
