A cracking filly by leading sire Lonhro topped the first session of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont today.
Consigned by Dawson Stud, the filly attracted bids from a number of parties before being purchased by John Chalmers Bloodstock for $260,000.
Chalmers said the filly, a half sister to four stakes performers including Group One winner Covertly, would join the stables of Wally Mitchell.
“She’s the stand out filly of the sale,” Chalmers said of the filly catalogued as lot 114.
“She is the most correct Lonhro I’ve seen and she is a really lovely individual.”
“I’ve researched a lot of the pedigree to see where the mares in the family are headed at stud and there is a lot of upside.”
“Considering the prices for quality fillies at other sales around Australasia I think she is great value as well,” Chalmers added.
The Lonhro filly was one of 18 yearlings to sell for $100,000 or more during the day.
Two colts both sold for $190,000 – one of them, a Testa Rossa colt from Tantra Dancer, was the first lot offered.
Also offered by Dawson Stud, the Testa Rossa colt will head to the Jim Taylor stable after being purchased by Damien Wyer.
“For mine he is the best horse to have come off Dawson Stud since Famous Roman,” Wyer said.
“His conformation is perfect, his x-rays were perfect and Jim wanted us to buy him.”
Last year Wyer purchased the sale topper Petrol Power. On the weekend he ran third in the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic.
The other $190,000 seller was the Choisir colt from Flight Path, purchased by Craig Thompson’s Mt Hallowell Stud.
The colt, offered by Anita Vale Stud, is the first live foal of the stakes performed, Magic Millions Perth 3YO Trophy winner Flight Path.
Catalogued as lot 71 the Choisir-Flight Path colt will join the stables of Trevor Andrews.
All up over $7.5 million was traded on 131 lots sold for an average price of $57,592.
“The clearance rate rounded out to 76 per cent which was very good considering there were some very soft patchesduring the day,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.
“While not comparing apples to apples because of a new sale format, the market felt very similar to last year.”
“Once we take everything into account with sales to come I think we’ll see the WA industry will be in good health.”
“It was great to see interstaters, including some at their first trip to the Perth sales, amongst the buyers.”
“The second session of the sale will be held from 11am tomorrow and we have some lovely individuals going under the hammer.”
“There will be some great value on offer,” Cox summed up.
