Bunbury horseman Brent Larsson completed the training achievement of the day when spritely eight-year-old Hadabeclocka stormed home to win the listed Cyril Flower Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday.
Having his first run since finishing down the track in the Perth Cup on New Year’s Day, Hadabeclorka sat off the speed before coming with a well timed run under Peter Knuckey to win by a half length.
“I’m very happy to see this horse win again,” a delighted Larsson said from the winner’s stall. “It’s been a fair while.”
Connections were quietly confident that their charge would prove more than competitive in the Perth feature following a slashing trial on his home track on January 22.
“I was very happy with his trial at Bunbury. It’s probably the best he’s ever trialled and we thought he was a bit of a hope today.”
“He’s such an athletic horse you can run him over any journey. I think it’s the work that has to go into him that takes the edge off him a bit.”
“I think he’s a bit better when you can keep him fresh.”
Larsson said the race turned out as planned and was delighted with how Knuckey handled the Hurricane Sky gelding.
“It was a great ride, I guess they always are when they win,” Larsson said. “I told him to let him get back and give him one run at them.”
Purchased for just $26,000 by renowned Perth bloodstock agent John Chalmers from the 2002 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, Hadablorka has turned into a great money spinner.
He has earned the Jilley family an imposing $368,705.
And while his earnings don’t quite match up to the $14.5 million earned by Makybe Diva – he does have something in common with the champion mare.
Tony Santic named his champion mare by using the first two letters of seven employees – Maureen, Kylie, Belinda, Diane and Vanessa.
And the Jilley’s did the same with Hadabeclorka. Hayden (youngest son), Damien (oldest son), Bevan (father), Clayton (second son), Oran (third son) and Kathryn (mother) making up the name of the family’s star galloper.
Hadabeclorka, now the winner of eight races, is the second stakes winner for his dam – the Sydney winner Mrs. Bold.
A daughter of Magic Millions flagbearer Snippets, Mrs. Bold has thrown three winners including fellow stakes winning Magic Millions graduate Songs of Vienna.
As well as being a multi-stakes producer Mrs. Bold is a well bred mare. She is a half sister to seven winners including Canterbury Gold Cup winner Red Chiffon.
