Kiwi Juvenile Chases Millions History

Alvesta as a yearling

January’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Slipper (1200m) could for the first time have a New Zealand trained runner.

Top kiwi horseman Peter McKay is eyeing off Queensland’s richest race with his outstanding juvenile prospect Alvesta – a sensational winner on Saturday.

The son of General Nediym was the talk of the Wanganui track when he bolted away to win the 800 metre juvenile dash by six widening lengths.

Connections then had their hearts in their mouths when he speared off the track, parting company with Sam Spratt, and jumping a rail on the outside of the straight.

Thankfully Alvesta wound up with just a couple of scratches and an Australian campaign for the exciting prospect remained on track.

“He’s as good as gold,” McKay told the NZ Herald’s Mike Dillon.

“The word was he’d jumped the outside running rail just after throwing Sam, but others have told me he ran down the outside of the rail and turned right into the chute for the 1600m start where he jumped a rail.”

“Some said he jumped one rail cleanly and then had a crack at the next one, tipped the top of it and crashed.”

“He’s not sore or lame and the only sign is a tiny bit of hair off his chest.”

“When he’s finished his trials he’s looked to turn right and that’s what he’s probably done this time.

“He’s not the sort of horse to do things wrong deliberately.”

McKay has always had a massive opinion of Alvesta after buying him from the draft of Patinack Farm at January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $80,000.

His ambitions of having a running in one of Australia’s best and richest races remained on track with the outstanding debut win.

The colt will now almost certainly cross the Tasman and run in the $100,000 listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.

“I’ve had in the back of my mind that if he won his debut by a good margin I’d look to take him over for that Melbourne race to try and get him qualified for enough stakemoney to get him into the Magic Millions race in Queensland in January.”

“If he’s won by only one length I wouldn’t even consider it, but six lengths is different.”

“If we can get enough dollars early then that’s the best path to take,” McKay summed up.

Alvesta is a son of Magic Millions 2YO Slipper winner General Nediym and is from the former classy racemare Rock Revival.

A seven time winner, including four on Sydney tracks, Rock Revival is a Flying Spur daughter of the Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Rock Review.

Rock Revival is therefore a half sister to five winners including Reisling Slipper Trial winner and Champagne Stakes runner-up Let’s Rock Again (dam of Dehere Again) and the twice stakes placed Sydney winner Vintage Rock.

Further back it is the same family as Group One winners Indian Summer, Apache King and Gnapur.
