Karuta Queen staked her claims for January’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with a brilliant debut win at Rosehill today.
Sent out at good odds after an eye catching second placing in a Canberra trial, Karuta Queen showed great speed to lead throughout in a dominant performance.
At the post Karuta Queen ($21-$26) held a three and three quarter margin over Danger Lurks ($10-$17), while Helmet ($6-$10) was another long neck back in third place.
While a couple of runners in the race caught the eye, they were no match for the Neville Layt prepared winner.
The filly paid for herself, with change, in winning on debut considering she cost just $30,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
She scooped $42,000 in prizemoney as well as a $20,000 BOBS bonus.
“She’s a real little natural and she’s beeing going a lot better than One More Grand when he came down and won in the city at two,” Layt told Racenet.
The filly would most likely face the starter once more before she heads to paddock.
“She’ll have another run, we just have to pick the right ones,” he added.
Purchased by owner Glenn Williams, Karuta Queen is a son of former outstanding Magic Millions graduate Not a Single Doubt.
He is the second winner, from two to race, for the former group winning juvenile Card Queen.
A half brother to Karuta Queen, by Toorak Toff’s sire Show a Heart, is being prepared by Durham Lodge for February’s 2011 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
Card Queen is now in Western Australia after being purchased by the Smith family’s Durham Lodge for $55,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
The colt by Show a Heart heading to next year’s sale is a quality individual according to Magic Millions Perth Manager Murray Tillett.
“He’s a lovely, lovely colt,” Tillett said. “He’s a real flashy individual and he’ll certainly take the eyes of buyers.”
