Promising Gold Coast youngster Rare Find became the first winner for his sire Gonski in Australia when he cruised to victory at Ipswich this afternoon.
The win is the second for Gonski following the victory of his daughter Czechout Girl in New Zealand late last year.
Rare Find sat just behind the leader and favourite Tycoon Cougar before switching off heels at the top of the straight and from there the result was never in doubt.
The lightly raced colt sprinted to the lead and by the time the finish line was reached he and rider Michael Cahill held a two length margin over Ultrazonal, while Tycoon Cougar was a further neck back in third place.
Rare Find is raced by Angelo “Lucky” Pippos in partnership with good friend Alexi Amarandos and was purchased by trainer Bryan Guy for $32,000 from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The promising colt was offered as a yearling by the team from Murrulla Stud after being pin-hooked for just $7,000 from the 2009 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
In winning and scooping a QTIS 600 bonus, Rare Find earned his connections over $20,000 with the victory.
Rare Find is the first winner to date for his dam, the once winning Shinko Forest mare Rare Prospect.
Successful at 1000 metres, Rare Prospect is a half sister to the international stakes winner of nine Judge Connelly.
Himself a Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, Gonski was a quality galloper for the Tim Martin stable winning at stakes level at Flemington as well as running fourth in the Caulfield Guineas.
A member of illustrious Darley operation, Gonski is a half brother to the Singapore Guineas winner Recast. He was bred by the Sangster family’s Swettenham Stud.
Gonski’s progeny are up and running and as well as his winner in Australia and New Zealand he is the sire of the early placegetters Gonski Girl, My Lady and Wrinkle Wonders.
He has a filly catalogued (lot 11) in next week’s Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, four colts being prepared for next month’s Adelaide Yearling Sale and a colt and filly for April’s QTIS 600 Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.
