Champion jockey Hugh Bowman predicted big things from the good looking grey following his maiden Group One victory.
The win capped a memorable day for Bowman and his friend, trainer Chris Waller. D’Argento’s brilliant victory came just 40 minutes after the pair teamed up with Winx for a world record breaking win in the Group One George Ryder Stakes.
“I’ve had so much confidence in this horse for a long time,” Bowman said after the race. “I think I cost him in the Hobartville when I was a little negative on him from the barriers.”
“He had no luck in the Randwick Guineas. I always thought 10 furlongs would be his best trip but I’d be inclined to push Chris to take him to the Derby after today’s performance.”
“He really relaxed in the run and he was strong late. Whatever he does this time in he’ll be a better horse in the spring,” Bowman added. “He’s still immature.”
Waller was originally thinking the colt might be better suited to The Doncaster at a mile, but he said he would assess that and speak to Bowman after the dominant Guineas win.
“I had serious doubts about him getting 2000 metres because I’ve seen the brilliance that he’s got,” Waller said.
“You don’t usually see such a brilliant sprinter/miler that I thought he was prior to the Randwick Guineas where he had no luck come out and be dominant in a Rosehill Guineas after being three wide.”
“I’ve got to reassess my thoughts. He obviously can stay and we’ll work out from a colt’s perspective where is his best value. Is it a Doncaster, so he can show off that speed, or do we go down the Derby path, which is such a traditional race on the Australian calendar.”
