Carnival Plans For Gundy Son

Leading Brisbane trainer Robert Heathcote is eyeing off Winter Carnival features for Gundy Son following his comprehensive win in the $101,875 Sky Racing Magic Millions Class 6 Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Gundy Son was well supported with bookmakers and he lived up to the expectations of punters when he got to the line home first.

The four-year-old son of Falvelon cruised home to beat The Sixties by a length and a half. Elmsford was another two and a half lengths back in third place.

Heathcote was impressed with the performance of the progressive galloper and said the paddock was next for the carnival bound gelding.

“Winning on any Saturday is great – but winning on Magic Millions makes it more special,” he said.

“He’s a been a bit unlucky this horse. He’s come here today and been heavily backed and it was only his second Saturday win.”

“Being a Class Six race (today) he’s done a good job. He’s a nice horse.”

Heathcote is expecting Gundy Son to continue to improve as he matures.

“The penny still hasn’t dropped for him yet. But when it does I think he can win a nice race.”

“He lets down nice. And it was a beautiful ride. From the barriers there was plenty of speed on and he got a nice trail.”

“Danny brought him out at the right time and he did everything right.”

And like many of the winners on today’s $4.6 million raceday, Gundy Son will be spelled with stakes races on the agenda.

“He’ll probably go to the paddock now and give him a little break before we get him ready for something in the winter carnival.”

“There’s a nice race in him and he’ll get a bit further.”

While Gundy Son is well behaved, and importantly quick on the track, he’s not always a gentleman around the stables. He is quite a handful for his riders.

“He’s been a bit of a bugger of a horse. I didn’t have him from day one. He used to bolt off on jockeys and he’s done that more than once.”

“He’s a bit of a challenge as a track worker. The little fellow who rides him for me, Stevey Wright – he has such an affinity with this horse.”

“He does him a treat every day and I take my hat off to Steve. I owe him a lot.”

Gundy Son was purchased for just $26,000 from the draft of Kelana Park at the 2007 Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale.

He is now the winner of five races and earned over $170,000. What that figure might be after the Winter Carnival – that’s anyone’s guess.
