Well known New South Wales based thoroughbred breeders and owners John and Marilyn Baxter got the perfect present for their 40th wedding anniversary when Break Card broke through in today’s listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill.
The Baxters, who operate Ruane Stud and Ruane Winery at Menangle, now have double reason to celebrate this evening after this bonny mare scored a residual boosting win in the stakes event.
Break Card was purchased for the Baxters for $30,000 from the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is trained for them by Gerald Ryan.
As it stands the mare has sent her earnings soaring to $312,730 and importantly she’s not a stakes winner with a broodmare future in mind for the Ruane team.
“Get got a gem of a spot (during the run,” Ryan said. “We’d been looking at getting her to this sort of trip for a while.”
“John (Baxter) said after her last run to have a crack at it – and this is right race for her over 1800 (metres) at her home track and she’s super fit.”
“At last she is a listed winner now,” Ryan added.
“She is as honest as they come and it’s great for John and Marilyn Baxter – they’ve been great supporters and they have stuck by me and today it’s their 40th wedding anniversary – they both need medals!”
Winning rider Jay Ford said everything went according to plan during the race and the Danzero mare gave a good kick in the straight when asked to accelerate.
“There was a distinct lack of speed in the race,” he said. “We went forward from the draw and ended up in a nice spot.”
“I felt the speed was only fair so I well and truly got onto my bike coming to the turn and I think that made the difference.”
“I didn’t want to wait for the others, I wanted to get on the front foot and get a break if I could,” Ford added.
“She’s been looking for this bit of a trip and she did the right thing and found the line strong.”
Break Card is one of three winners produced by the unraced Fairy King mare Fleur de Jazz – the other two Jackpot Jazz and Louis the Lip were both winners in Brisbane.
Fleur de Jazz is a half sister to the South African Group Two and Three winner Zelator (Alzao) and well as the unraced grandam of present day triple Group One winner Yosei.
Further back it is the family of international stars Aliyoun, Desert Story, Alamshar, Alayan and the now Australian based Alandi.
