Hardy stayer Black On Gold landed a Magic Millions blow at his fourth attempt with a tenacious victory in Saturday’s $1 million Frizelle Sunshine Magic Millions Subzero (2400m) at the Gold Coast. |
Chris Waller’s seven-year-old – who was runner-up in the same race last year, third in 2019 and sixth in 2018 – was aided by a patient ride from Brenton Avdulla, who found the back of race favourite Ballistic Boy in the run. Avdulla angled Black On Gold towards the centre of the track at the top of the straight and, once balanced, the gelding let down with a sharp turn of speed to reel in Parry Sound and Elaborate. The win was the second leg of a double for Avdulla who said he had a soft spot for Black On Gold, aboard whom he’s now won five races. “He’s such a pleasure to ride and he responds well to me,” Avdulla said. “Chris Waller has such a knack with these horses, a lot of credit has to go to him and also to the owners, BK Racing, who do a great job and are big supporters of mine.” Black On Gold, who was purchased for $200,000 by BK Racing and Breeding at the 2015 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, has now won more than $1.5 million in prizemoney and bonuses. The win was Waller’s ninth win on Magic Millions Raceday and third in the staying feature after the success of Tumultuous in 2018 and 2019. Waller teamed up with Coolmore on several occasions during the first four days of the 2021 Magic Millions Yearling Sale to purchase several standout lots, including Lot 115, a Snitzel colt out of Bonny O’Reilly offered by Widden Stud that was secured for $1.9 million. |
