Exciting juvenile Berenger shone in the gloom at Ballarat today when he demolished his rivals in the Ballarat Come to Life Plate (1400m).
Trained by master horseman Lee Freedman, Berenger worked early in the race to cross the field and establish a lead – a position he wouldn’t relinquish.
Allowed to length in the straight, Berenger stormed over the wet track to win by an ever increasing six and a half length margin.
Even more impressive were the comments of Sunday’s Group One winning rider Ben Melham who said the son of Holy Roman Emperor didn’t appreciate the heavy conditions.
“He’s a nice horse and he wasn’t entirely happy in the going either,” Melham said from the winner’s stall.
“He’ll be much better on the top of the ground.”
“He’s going to be suited over further (ground) as well – he has a good future,” Melham added.
Berenger was purchased by Adrian Nicoll of BBA Ireland for $165,000 from the Broad Crossing draft at last year’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
He is a three quarter brother to the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes runner-up Acoustic Sound.
His dam Oscar’s Pride, a winner in New Zealand, is a half sister to former outstanding sprinter Spanish Mix – a multiple Group One winner in Melbourne.
A three quarter to Berenger has been catalogued for this month’s Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.
A daughter of Danehill’s imported son Oratorio, the filly is a member of the Berkeley Park Stud draft at the auction and is set for sale at Lot 251.
The 2011 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale commences on May 25. To view the online catalogue click here.
