Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir had never taken a horse to the Gold Coast to contest a Magic Millions feature before today’s $10 million raceday.

But the Victorian horseman didn’t have to wait long to break his maiden with dual Group 1-winning gelding Lucky Hussler posting a brilliant victory in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m).

Weir, who also had Mahuta contesting the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, said both Lucky Hussler and jockey Glen Boss had risen to the occasion to capture the $1 million feature.

“We haven’t had the right horse bring up here and the two horses we’ve brought up today (Lucky Hussler and Mahuta) that we thought were the right horses to bring,” Weir said.

“He performed like a Group 1 horse today and so did the jockey.

“He got a beautiful run midfield on the fence, it was a cool ride and the horse ran terrific.”

The win was looking unlikely mid-week after inclement weather forced the cancellation of the duo’s original flight to the Gold Coast but in typical Weir fashion, there was no panicking from the stable.

“It wasn’t a drama really but we were just getting a little bit nervous because if we missed the flight on Thursday night things weren’t looking too good but we were able to get on and it hasn’t affected the horses’ preparation,” Weir said.

As the trainer hinted, Lucky Hussler was aided by a quality Glen Boss ride that saw the son of Husson settle midfield on the fence before sprinting hard along the rail.

The six-year-old quickly overcame leader Strawberry Boy, with Baligari closing well to grab third place.

Boss heaped praise on the galloper that has carried him to Group 1 wins in the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and William Reid Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne.

“I’ve got so much fondness for this horse because even when he’s not 100% he just gives his all,” Boss said.

“He has carried a big weight today and it felt like we were running time but he is a proper Group 1 horse.

“A huge thanks goes out to the owners because not everything has gone straight forward for us but they’ve stuck solid the whole time.”

“Well done to the Weir camp and it’s just nice for me to be on their coat tails every now and then, I think this is the only horse I ride in his stable.”

Lucky Hussler, a son of Husson, was purchased for $100,000 at the 2011 Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Monarch Stud.
