Exciting colt Wolf Cry ended a series of Stakes grade near misses with a dominant victory in Australia’s richest maiden, the $250,000 Marriot Surfers Paradise Magic Millions Maiden (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained galloper proved too classy for his rivals, bounding away for jockey Blake Shinn to score a three length victory over Haveasay and Catch A Fire in race-record time.

Peter Snowden said he was pleased to see the son of Street Cry breakthrough for a win after placings in last year’s Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) and Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m).

“The form was there to say that he had good ability and he’s come back really well,” Snowden said.

The win wasn’t without concern for connections and punters with the $2 favourite receiving attention from the farrier at the barriers after losing a shoe.

“It was just unfortunate that he was in the gates for a long time today and just probably got a bit restless and slipped a shoe,” Snowden said.

“It’s not ideal to be replated behind the gates because he is a colt and he is very full of himself but the result was great and it was good to see him win as well as he did.”

Wolf Cry, a son of Street Cry, was a $320,000 purchase for James Bester and Astute Bloodstock from the draft of Amarina Farm at the 2014 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He is a half brother to the stakes performed mare Glenbawn Dame being from the stakes performed Redoute’s Choice mare Starfish.
