Spirited bidding from a first class international buying bench helped return record breaking results at the 2011 Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale which concluded on the Gold Coast today.
A colt by Blue Diamond Stakes winner Nadeem topped the day’s selling when he was snapped up by Macau based brothers Nicholas and James Moore for $220,000 from the draft of Washpool Thoroughbreds.
The colt was one of 10 two-year-olds to sell for six figure prices helping the sale return a record average price of $41,206.
The clearance rate of 69 per cent yesterday soared during today’s second session and it rounded out at 74 per cent for the sale – also well up on last year’s figures.
It was a tight battle at the top for sale topping honours with the Moore’s purchase of the Nadeem colt narrowly taking that honour at $220,000.
“He’s a cracking colt who is going to make a lovely three-year-old,” James Moore said.
“Hopefully he turns out to be a star when he heads to either Hong Kong or Macau.”
The Moore family have had a successful sale – purchasing a number of their star picks of the auction.
“We really must thank all of our owners for their support,” Moore added. “We’ve been able to secure some lovely two-year-olds and we look forward to the future with them.”
“Racing is really blossoming in Macau thanks to Thomas Li and Dr Ho and their team and we are glad to be taking home some lovely prospects to race over the coming seasons.”
The second top seller today was an outstanding colt by Carry the Flag from the Robyn Wise draft who made $210,000 to the bid of successful Singapore based trainer Hideyuki Takaoka.
The Japanese horseman was making his first trip to the Gold Coast and his three purchases were the first he’d ever made in Australia.
“He (the $210,000 Carry the Flag colt) was our number one pick of the sale,” Takaoka said. “He’s a nice youngster who I look forward to training in Singapore.”
As usual the depth of buying from Singapore was extensive with no fewer than 36 youngsters set to be heading to Kranji following the sale.
There were also successful buyers from Hong Kong (12 lots), Korea (14), Macau (10), Malaysia (14), Philippines (16) and South Africa (5).
The locals were not to be outdone with strong buying from a number of domestic buyers including the Melbourne based agent Cameron Cooke.
Cooke signed for seven youngsters including an All Bar One colt today for $165,000.
“It’s been a great sale,” Cooke said. “All but one of my purchases was made for Waverley Park.”
“Waverley have had a great sale – buying no fewer than 10 lots and also selling two including a Magnus filly we pin-hooked from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $17,500. She made $80,000 and the Waverley team did a tremendous job with her.”
“It is great to see a number of quality lots staying in Australia and we’re confident they can continue the great run of graduates of this sale in the coming seasons,” Cooke added.
All up the sale grossed over $7.2 million with 175 lots sold at an average price of $41,206.
“It has been a fantastic sale from an international participation perspective – 107 of the 175 lots sold were purchased by overseas clients,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.
“Full credit for that to David Chester and (Singapore representative) Wade Burridge for all their hard work in recruiting buyers from throughout Asia for this sale.”
“The vendors who know their horses and their value have had a great sale,” Cox said.
“A couple of real success stories included the Not a Single Doubt from Nolen Racing who made $140,000 and the Carry a Flag colt from Robyn Wise (as agent) who realised $210,000.”
“Those horses were purchased for $7,500 and $36,000 respectively as yearlings through the Gold Coast sale ring – both were expertly prepared for the sale and proved to be great pin-hook successes.”
“The Racehorse Sale which followed today’s session was a great success with $283,000 changing hands on 33 lots sold at an average price of over $8,500 and a clearance rate of 89 per cent.”
