The VRC Derby could be on the agenda for Shadows in the Sun after he scored a stylish win in the Pura Light Start Plate (1600m) at Caulfield today.
A son of Shellscrape’s sire Dane Shadow, Shadows in the Sun tracked the leader throughout before finishing too strong and win by a long neck.
Trainer Anthony Cummings was pleased with the win and said Victoria’s blue riband classic was still a chance for the promising young galloper.
“He’s still got a lot to learn,” Cummings said. “He still does a lot wrong in his races, you saw that in the last furlong, but loads of talented.”
“He’s a nice horse going places.”
“He’s got a few options going forward from here either the mile, perhaps a mile and a quarter or we could step him up to the mile and a half for the Derby,” he added.
“Craig Newitt rode him in Queensland and got off and said he’d stay all day.”
“He rode him in the Group One at randwick and he said the same thing that day.”
“He does hit the line very well and he’s got that good attribute that he can switch off and do what you ask him.”
Michael Walker, who rides a lot of work for Cummings’ Melbourne operation under the care of foreman Graham Woolston, picked up the ride on Shadows in the Sun from Brenton Avdulla.
The recent Group One winning apprentice was unable to make it to the track in time after the arrival of his Sydney flight was delayed from heavy fog.
“The horse wanted to over do it a little and travel a bit hard,” Walker said after the strong long neck win.
“He never handled the track – the track is a lot worse than it is rated – it’s bordering on heavy,” Walker added.
Cummings paid $280,000 for Shadows in the Sun at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Kitchwin Hills – the stud which stands his sire Dane Shadow.
Shadows in the Sun, a winner in Sydney as a two-year-old,is one of three good winners produced by the Best Western mare Best Out West.
He is a half brother to the listed Fernhill Handicap winner Stone Canyon.
A half sister to Shadows in the Sun, by globetrotting sprinter Choisir, has been entered by the team from Kitchwin Hills for January’s 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
